Same-day garage door repair across the Kansas City metro — springs, openers, cables, off-track doors, rollers, panels, sensors. Garage Door Masters KC is family-owned in Olathe and runs repair calls 7 days a week, with real after-hours availability for true emergencies. When your door fails, tell us the symptom: a loud bang then it won't lift (broken spring), the opener runs but the door doesn't move (stripped drive gear), the door reverses before closing (sensor or down-force issue), or the door hangs crooked (cable jumped its drum). We diagnose on the spot, explain the cause in plain language, and give you the flat-rate price before any work starts. Our $79 service call goes toward the job if we do the repair the same day. We stock common parts on every truck — springs, cables, gear kits, rollers — so most calls finish in one visit without a parts run. Bonded and insured; 4.9 stars from 490+ KC neighbors; A+ BBB.

Our tech answered, was at our house in 30 minutes, and had it fixed within the hour. Smart, friendly, skilled.

Tell us the symptom

Most garage door problems fall into a handful of patterns, and the symptom usually points straight to the cause. The diagnose tool below walks you through it, and a real person is one call away if you'd rather just talk it through.

  • Loud bang, now stuck: a broken spring — don't force it
  • Closes then reverses: almost always the safety sensors
  • Off-track or crooked: a jumped roller or cable — leave it for us
  • Opener dead or grinding: a stripped gear, bad board, or time for a new unit
  • Slow, noisy, shaky: worn rollers and a door that wants a tune-up

Same-day repair, parts on every truck

The reason we can fix most doors the same day is simple: we keep the common springs, cables, rollers, hinges and opener parts on every truck. So instead of a diagnosis on Monday and a repair on Thursday, a real local tech diagnoses and fixes it in one visit — about 95% of the time. You get the price up front, flat-rate, before any work starts.

KNOW YOUR DOOR

Torsion spring

Wound steel above the door that stores the energy to lift it. A standard spring is rated about 10,000 cycles (7–10 years); we install high-cycle springs up to 80,000.

We repair every part of the door

Springs and cables, rollers and hinges, off-track and bent sections, opener and remote problems, weatherseal and panels — we handle the whole system, residential and commercial, across the entire KC metro. And because we own our lift and trailer, even the tall commercial doors are no problem.

Honest pricing, real local techs

No call center, no out-of-state dispatcher, no commission upsells. Our service call is $79 and goes toward the job if we do the work the same day. The owner or one of our own techs comes out, tells you exactly what's wrong, and quotes the price you'll actually pay. That's the whole reason we're at 4.9 stars from 490+ KC neighbors.

What KC repair crews find on a typical call

Spring calls lead the board — a torsion spring snapping on a cold morning is the single most common emergency in the metro, and we carry the correct springs for residential doors on every truck. After springs, the next most common repairs are opener failures (stripped drive gear, dead logic board, photo-eye sensors out of line), lift cables that have jumped off their drums or frayed enough to let go, and doors that've come off track after a bump from a bumper or a hard slam. Understanding which symptom points to which cause is the most useful thing we can give you — use the diagnose tool on this page, or just call and describe what the door is doing. The bang, the grind, the blinking light, the crooked travel — we'll tell you the likely cause before we even come out.

  • Broken torsion springs — the loud bang that leaves the door stuck
  • Opener won't run — stripped gear or failed logic board
  • Door reverses before it closes — photo-eye sensors out of alignment
  • Lift cable off the drum — door hangs crooked on one side
  • Door came off its track after a bump or hard close
  • Slow, noisy, shaky travel — worn rollers and dry hardware

How Kansas City weather drives repair timing

KC's climate means certain problems peak at certain times of year, and if you've lived here long enough you've probably noticed the pattern. Torsion spring failures are most common in winter and early spring: the metro averages around 100 below-freezing nights per year, and each freeze-thaw cycle stresses the steel a little more. The most dangerous morning for a spring is the first hard cold snap after a stretch of mild weather — the overnight low drops fast, the spring sits under tension all night at near-zero, and the first trip of the morning is when it lets go. Opener failures peak in mid-summer, when attic temperatures above attached garages can reach 120–130°F in a KC July — that heat stresses the motor, logic board and belt, and it shows up in our call volume every July and August. Cable and roller wear is year-round but accelerates in garages where hardware doesn't get lubricated before fall — ice-melt products tracked in by cars corrode bottom brackets and cable hardware through the winter, and rollers running dry in the heat accelerate wear in summer. A fall tune-up breaks this cycle and is consistently the cheapest thing our customers do to avoid an unplanned repair call.

Repair vs. replace — we have the conversation honestly

When we arrive for a repair, we look at the whole door, not just the one failed part — because sometimes the most helpful thing we can tell you is that a repair isn't the right call. A spring on a 20-year-old door with cracked sections and no insulation is worth a real conversation about replacement, because a new insulated Clopay or DoorLink door on monthly financing can cost less per month than you might expect and solves three problems at once. But most of the time — probably 80% of the same-day calls we run — the door is structurally sound and the problem is one part: a spring, a cable, a gear, a sensor. In those cases, we fix it the same day, the $79 service call goes toward the job, and you're done in under an hour. We don't earn a commission for pushing a new door, so the recommendation you get from us is the one we'd make on our own home.

If you're on the fence about whether it makes more sense to repair or replace, the free new-door consultation is the right starting point. We'll look at the door honestly, lay out your repair and replacement options side by side, and let you decide — no pressure, no obligation.

How a visit works

We keep it simple and honest. You call or book online and we give you a window, then we call ahead 10–30 minutes before we arrive (if we can't reach you, we text). The tech diagnoses your door on the spot, explains what's going on in plain language, and gives you the full, flat-rate price before any work starts — so there are never surprises on the invoice.

  1. Call or book — a real local person answers, 7 days a week
  2. We confirm a window and call ahead before we arrive
  3. On-site diagnosis with honest, up-front pricing — you approve before we start
  4. Most jobs finished the same visit — common parts ride on every truck
  5. A 30-point safety check and a balance test before we leave

Good questions

Questions about same-day garage door repair.

Can you come the same day?+
Most days, yes. We keep parts on every truck and cover the whole metro — call and we'll give you the soonest window.
What should I tell you when I call about a garage door problem?+
Just describe what the door is doing: the noise it made, whether it stopped mid-travel, whether it's stuck open or closed, whether the opener runs but the door doesn't move. That's usually enough to tell us the likely cause, what parts we'll need, and how fast we can be out.
Is the $79 service call charged if I decide not to do the repair?+
The $79 service call covers the trip and on-site diagnosis. If you do the work the same day, it goes toward the job — so you're not paying it on top of the repair. If you decide not to proceed with the repair, the service call fee still applies.
My spring broke — can I still get in through the garage manually?+
Possibly, but carefully. With the spring broken, the door's full weight is on the cables and opener, not the spring. You can disconnect the opener with the red emergency-release cord (only if the door is fully down) and try to lift it by hand, but it will be very heavy. If it doesn't lift easily, leave it — forcing it can snap the cables. Call us and we'll get a tech out the same day.
How long does a typical same-day repair take?+
Most repairs are done in 30 to 60 minutes. A spring replacement typically takes about an hour; a cable repair or roller swap is usually 30–45 minutes. Opener repairs vary. We'll give you an honest estimate when we arrive.
My garage door opener runs the full travel but the door doesn't move at all — what's happening?+
This almost always means the opener has disconnected from the door — either intentionally (the emergency release was pulled, decoupling the trolley from the drive) or by mechanical failure (a stripped drive gear or snapped chain/belt). Check the trolley carriage on the opener rail: if the emergency release lever is in the unlocked position, push the trolley toward the door until it clicks back into drive. If the trolley is connected but still not moving the door, the drive gear or chain/belt is the likely failure — audible as the motor running with no load resistance. We carry common LiftMaster and Chamberlain drive gears on every truck.
Is it safe to keep using my garage door if it makes a loud bang when it closes?+
No — stop using it and call us. A loud bang on closing almost always signals a broken torsion spring (which snapped under tension), a cable that snapped and slapped the door, or a roller that jumped its track and banged against the panel. All three are safety issues: a broken spring means the door's weight is now unsupported and it can close suddenly without the opener holding it; a snapped cable means one side has no support; a derailed roller means the door can jam or drop. Even if the door appears to still be working, the bang is the hardware telling you something failed.
How do I manually open my garage door if the power is out?+
Every automatic opener has a red emergency release cord hanging from the trolley on the main rail, usually located about a foot from the motor head. Pulling it straight down disconnects the door from the opener so you can lift it by hand. If the springs are intact and the door is balanced, it should lift with moderate effort and stay up on its own. If it is very heavy or won't stay up, the springs may have broken — in that case, lift only enough to clear the car, prop the door with a 2×4, and call us. After power returns, pull the release cord back toward the motor head until it clicks to reconnect the drive. If the door won't reconnect, the trolley may need adjustment — a quick fix on our next visit.
