Installation, not just repair

This page is for openings that do not have a working door yet — a trailer being fitted out, a truck body being refitted after damage, or a commercial opening that has never had a roll-up door on it. It is a different job from swapping a worn curtain, because the mounting, the drum position and the tracks all have to be set from scratch rather than matched to what was there.

How a roll-up door actually works

If you are specifying one for the first time, it helps to know what you are buying. A roll-up door is a curtain of interlocking slats that winds onto a drum above the opening — it does not swing out or fold back. A counterbalance spring inside the drum carries the weight of the curtain so it can be lifted and lowered without a fight, side guides hold the curtain as it travels, and a bottom bar with a seal and a latch closes it off. That is exactly why it suits a vehicle or a dock: the whole mechanism stays inside the footprint of the opening, and nothing swings out into the traffic lane or across the dock.

Trucks and trailers

Box trucks and trailers get the same care as anything else we fit: the opening is measured, the drum and brackets are mounted square, the tracks are set so the curtain runs without binding, and the spring tension is balanced so one person can work the door without fighting it. A door that is out of balance from day one is a door that eats springs and cables for the rest of its life.

Commercial openings and docks

We also fit roll-up doors on commercial buildings — warehouse and loading dock openings across the KC metro. We carry our own lift, which is what makes the higher dock work practical without hiring access equipment in.

What we need to know before we quote

A quote on a new installation comes down to measurements. We need the height and width of the opening, the headroom above it for the drum, the depth available for the side guides, whether the opening is actually square, and whether it is a vehicle or a building. We would far rather measure on site than work from a description over the phone. Dimensions that sound close can differ enough to change the drum or the guide placement, and a door specified from a guess is a door that does not sit right — which is an expensive thing to discover after it has been made.

  • Height and width of the opening.
  • Headroom above it for the drum.
  • Depth available for the side guides.
  • Whether the opening is actually square.
  • Whether it is a vehicle or a building.

What a finished installation should look like

The drum and brackets are mounted square to the opening. The side guides are parallel, so the curtain runs its full travel without binding anywhere. The spring tension is set so one person can work the door without leaning on it. The bottom bar seats evenly on its seal rather than closing on a gap at one end, and the latch engages without being forced. If a new door feels heavy, sticks at a point, or the bottom bar will not sit flat, the job is not finished — so we run it through its travel and check every one of those before we leave.

How an installation runs

  2. Free quote The right door and hardware for that exact opening.
  3. Mount Drum and brackets square, guides parallel.
  4. Balance Spring tension set so one person can work the door.
  5. Hand over Full travel checked, bottom bar seating, latch engaging.

Getting a price

Quotes on new installations are free, and we would rather come and measure than guess from a phone description, because openings vary and a wrong measurement is an expensive mistake. If the opening already has a door on it and you are not sure whether it needs replacing or just fixing, start with roll-up door repair or replacement.

The first few weeks on a new door

A new curtain beds in as it is used, so a small change in feel over the first weeks is normal. Keep the guides and the bottom channel clear of debris, and if the door starts binding or begins to sit crooked, call us early rather than working it harder — that is the point at which it is still a small adjustment. Do not force it if it jams: the counterbalance spring holds a large amount of stored energy and a curtain that has left its guides can drop fast. We are out seven days a week, so there is no reason to keep using a door that has started to fight you.

Questions about roll-up truck door installation.

What counts as an installation rather than a replacement?+
Installation is for an opening that does not have a working door yet — a trailer being fitted out, a truck body refitted after damage, or a commercial opening that has never carried a roll-up door. The mounting, drum position and tracks all get set from scratch.
Do you fit doors on buildings as well as vehicles?+
Yes. We fit roll-up doors on warehouse and loading dock openings across the KC metro, and we carry our own lift, which is what makes the higher dock work practical without hiring access equipment in.
Why does balance matter on a new door?+
We set the spring tension so one person can work the door without fighting it. A door that is out of balance from day one is a door that eats springs and cables for the rest of its life.
